What is a valve guide?
The function of the valve guide is to guide the movement of the valve, to ensure that the valve does reciprocal linear motion, so that the valve and valve seat ring can be correctly fitted, and the valve stem heat transfer to the cylinder head.
The valve guide tube working temperature is also higher, about 200 ℃. Valve rod in the conduit movement, only by the air distribution mechanism splash out of the oil lubrication, so easy to wear. So more with the self-slip performance of ductile iron or powder metallurgy material made of separate parts, with a certain interference pressed into the cylinder head valve guide seat hole, to prevent falling off.
In some engines to prevent the valve guide from losing, the use a card ring to fix and position the guide.
The bottom of the valve guide into the intake and exhaust tract, to prevent resistance to airflow, into the end of the outer circle made of conical. There is a clearance of 0.05~0.12mm between the valve guide and valve stem so that the valve stem can move freely in the guide.

If the valve stem and valve guide clearance are too small, it is easy to lead to valve stem card bite, poor sealing, will cause valve burn, so that the power, economy, and emissions decline.
If the valve stem and valve guide clearance are too large, it will cause the following abnormal phenomena.
1. Valve seat is not smooth, the seal decreases, and accelerates wear, resulting in valve burnout, power, economy, emissions decline, etc.
2. Air leakage in the air intake system, making the gasoline engine mixture thinner.
3. Excessive oil seeps down through the gap into the combustion chamber or air duct (especially in the intake process), resulting in increased oil consumption, blue smoke, and accelerated formation of carbon.
4. Exhaust gas enters the crankcase through the gap between the exhaust valve stem and valve guide in the exhaust stroke.
5. When the pressure at the exhaust port is lower than the pressure in the crankcase, the oil leaks into the exhaust port through the gap between the exhaust valve stem and the valve guide.
The reason for blue smoke at startup is often the exhaust valve duct gap is too large, when the shutdown time oil leaks down through the exhaust valve duct gap into the combustion chamber and adheres to the exhaust manifold, and is burned off at startup. This phenomenon will reduce or disappear as the engine temperature rises.
The role of the valve oil seal is to prevent excessive oil leakage through the valve guide and valve stem gap into the combustion chamber or intake and exhaust tract. It is a rubber seal, installed on the upper end of the valve guide. If the valve oil seal is damaged, there will be too much oil through the gap between the valve and valve guiding the downward flow of the combustion chamber or air duct, resulting in increased oil consumption, accompanied by exhaust blue smoke, accelerating the formation of carbon in the valve and combustion chamber.
