Gaskets are elastic components used in a range of mechanical applications to cover the points connecting two dissimilar materials. They are most commonly used to seal the intersection between two target surfaces to stop the leakage of liquids and gases. However, other properties may include sound reduction, vibration resistance, and increased hygiene.
In many ways, a gasket serves the same purpose as a seal. The main difference between the two is that seals are used on components that rotate, while gaskets work on items that have flat, static surfaces, such as applications using joints or flanges.
Gaskets can be made from several flat materials such as embossed steel, other metals, high-temperature fiber materials, graphite, ceramic composites, cork, rubber, interface materials, and composites using combinations of the above. They should be replaced every time the machine is disassembled and reassembled.
Gaskets are the key to protecting efficiency, performance, hygiene, and long-term safety, even in applications where machinery is working without seals.
As mentioned earlier, the main function of a gasket is to cover the intersection between two static surfaces. Their primary function is to prevent leaks, which can subsequently bring a wide range of benefits. The list includes;
to ensure that the engine and machine can achieve optimum power,
promote consistent and efficient performance,
Create eco-friendly operations due to lack of energy waste,
prevent damage to nearby components due to heat and other problems,
Slow down the rate of wear in the applications they are used for sealing.
All of these issues can save the business time, money, and effort when dealing with companies and assets. For a consumer product like a car, this means less maintenance and subsequent protection of the brand's image.
In addition to stopping leaks, installing gaskets on intersecting spaces creates a protective barrier to the two components covered. In engines, for example, this then protects these items from exposure to heat, pressure, and friction caused by contact with moving parts.
An often overlooked attribute of gaskets is that they also join surfaces with less than perfect finishes. Therefore, the material must be easily manipulated to correct these irregularities. While some applications use asbestos material due to extremely high pressures, most gaskets today try to avoid it where possible to increase machine operator safety.
In most cases, gaskets can be tightened (by hand or tool) to make a seal. However, in some cases, a sealant must be applied to the gasket surface to ensure no leakage.
Different types of gaskets
There are many different types of gaskets available, all with different properties such as resistance to chemicals, temperature, pressure, and electromagnetic forces. However, most components that utilize them will use one of the following seven main types.
1. Corrugated metal gaskets are characterized by the use of 0.5-inch or larger cross sections.
2. Envelope gasket with a double jacket or polyvinyl fluoride on the outside of the stainless steel metal core.
3. Flat metal gaskets have stainless steel cores but have low compressibility.
4. Kammprofile gaskets are mainly used in heat exchangers and have grooved metal surfaces.
5. Non-asbestos gaskets, made of sheet metal, for low temperature and low-pressure environments.
6. Ring gaskets, also known as ring joints or RTJs, can be designed as oval or octagonal gaskets.
7. Spiral wound gasket, covering items with an inner ring (suitable for high pressure) and items without an inner ring.
